I’ll try to explain in few words who am I and what I’m looking for…
My name is Pierrick. I am 3O years old. Until the end of September 2020 I am associate professor at the university of Toulouse (France) in computing science. Concretely I teach programming, networks management, system administration, web and I “make research” about the Internet of Things.
Actually, as a teacher I was like a worker in a factory which produces engineers. Those engineers will then contribute to the society by consuming and producing more and more things with no limit in their life. As a researcher in the university I had to publish more and more “scientific” articles, whatever their quality or their scientific influence. What matters was the quantity of article.
I also question the impacts of new technologies on our society. Internet is for example a beautiful opportunity to bring people closer, but I don’t think we use new technologies for the right purpose. Moreover the ecological impacts of technologies on our planet are considerable.
For all these reasons I was more and more uncomfortable with my position. I had the feeling I contributed for a society that I don’t want. I had a feeling my acts were not consistent with my values. I had this job since four years. This is the type of job very difficult to get in France and that you “should” keep until the end of your career. But I decided to quit for the end of September 2020.
I expect more love, respect, kindness and sharing for the society. I think it’s the only way to live together at 7 or 8 billions on this planet. As Gandhi said “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. So now I try to have a life that follows my wishes.
When I was young I wanted to sail, travel through the oceans and discover the world and his inhabitants. That’s why this year I started to learn sailing with the purpose to cross the Atlantic for this winter. I also get the Offshore license. I’m also used to adventures in mountains alone or with friends. I think one of my most beautiful experience is a trek with a friend in Iceland where we crossed the island from the North to the South following the 18th meridian west. We get some troubles with water, wind and solitude :)
I like your project and I believe we share the same values. I read you will stay in Mediterranean until November. That would be perfect to me. If you agree, I could join you in October, taking the time to meet each others and deciding together whether I will follow you to Brazil.
Sorry for the length of my message.
I hope to see you soon.
